With one of the most iconic tourist attractions in England just two miles away, Brampton stands virtually in the shadows of Hadrian's Wall. Cyclists and walkers of all abilities can get out and explore more of the surrounding areas with ease and taking the decision to spend a few days in one of the nearby Cumbrian cottages will soon prove a shrewd move. The Talkin Tarn Country Park, which is close to Brampton, is an ideal setting to fully appreciate the peace and tranquillity of this region and has walking trails ranging from 1.5km to 3.5km, along with a children's play area. Stroll around the 65-acre lake set amid 120 acres of farmland and woodland or get out on the water, while Gelt Wood is another popular spot with ramblers and wildlife enthusiasts. Overlooking Brampton is a Norman motte complete with a statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle and the panoramic views from the top of the mound are a sight to behold. As for Brampton itself, this small market town is roughly nine miles east of Carlisle and is accessible by either road or rail. In the centre is Moot Hall, an octagonal building built in 1817 that now houses the tourist informational centre, while St Martin's Church is renowned for its exceptional stained glass windows.
